about

Jakob Häglsperger aka Kalipo is back with five brand new tracks on Ki Records label at the beginning of this year. With An der Straße gegenüber, the protean Berlin music producer once again demonstrates his versatile approach to music.
The EP contains two features of the duo Wiener Planquadrats. Their characteristic charm, which Kalipo got to know and appreciate first-hand, can be heard immediately on the opening track, An der Straße gegenüber, which will also be the first single release. "It was one of those evenings that ends in a Viennese dive bar across the street and lasts until sunrise." From this appreciation of the spontaneous opportunities waiting around the corner, the track received its name. Wiener Planquadrat blend their Viennese style with Kalipo's beats, creating a truly original collabo-
ration. "It's a 1980s-influenced electro track, with influences from NDW classics and my other electropunk project Frittenbude," says Kalipo. As a
permanent member of Frittenbude, Kalipo regularly stamps his musical signature there, whilst also working on other projects such as the new
dark disco queen Dina Summer.

In the second track on An der Straße gegenüber titled I'm Not A Robot (feat. Rico + Franco) the magic of the French language emerges and meets a counteracting "pounding, driving, robot-like beat, raw and passionate and made for the sweaty and long club and festival nights”, as Kalipo describes it. The result is an exhilarating combi-
nation that invites you to dance whilst also offering space for longing, yearning and desire – the overriding feeling is one of all-consuming passion.

After this comes the third track Never Go Back Again which generates a liberating spirit of optimism. “The lyrics were written and sung by me and are about the moment of finally leaving again.
After all the hurdles that the pandemic has thrown at us in recent years, to finally go out again, play concerts, make people dance and laugh, leave all the pain behind and never go back to it.” Kalipo opts for a captivating piano motif here alongside the vocals, giving it a warm, soulful and powerful house spirit.

On Lost in the Night (feat. Wiener Planquadrat) the positivity is only exacerbated, manifesting an attitude of letting go and abandoning oneself to new ideas, inspirations and beginnings - with its compulsion to surrender to the music and focus on the present. After the evocative dance floor adventure, Kalipo sets a final musical monument with House of the Art: the place where many of his ideas are translated into music, during the long nights between Berlin sunsets and twilight with a translucent indie touch. The song is “a tribute to the building where I have my studio. It's an old workers' brick row house in Berlin, full of studios, artists and strange characters who are all kind of searching and make this place a unique and special place," Kalipo describes.

After his 2021 Ki Records double album Happy Little Accidents, with which he paid tribute and respect to the cult painter Bob Ross, he ups the
ante in terms of avant-garde on his new EP An der Straße gegenüber. Kalipo shows once again how at ease he is with creating an enchanting mixture of house, techno and electropunk – paired with
exciting vocals that break any genre-conforming expectations.
